What are clinical trials?
Clinical trials are specialized studies that evaluate treatments and procedures to determine whether they’re safe and effective in humans. Eye Treatment Center is an independent research facility that conducts or participates in clinical trials in ophthalmology, neurology, and psychiatry.
What are the phases of a clinical trial?
Clinical trials have four separate phases, along with phase 0 for the very earliest research.
Phase I
In phase I, the doctors test a drug in a small number of patients using low doses. The main focus of a phase I trial is finding the ideal dose with the fewest side effects.
Phase II
In phase II, more patients participate in testing, and the dosage is generally kept the same.
Phase III
In phase III, a large group of patients takes the new medication. This is a long phase, in many cases lasting for a few years. The phase III trial focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of the new drug in relation to existing treatments. To move to the final phase, the new drug must show benefits equal to or exceeding those of the existing drugs.
Phase IV
Phase IV, the final phase, takes place after the drug has been granted approval by the FDA. Phase IV trials can last a very long time because the main goal is to evaluate long-term safety and effectiveness.
